aquatic therapy

SR’s Aquatic Therapy is beneficial for patients recovering from orthopedic and various neurological conditions and surgeries. Aquatic therapy uses the physical properties of water including temperature, buoyancy, viscosity, and hydrostatic pressure to assist patients in both healing and exercise performance.
- Temperature: Warm water helps patients with such diagnoses as fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, and back pain by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to injured areas.
- Buoyancy: This allows patients to reduce the force of stress placed on the joints by supporting their weight. This is especially important in speeding the recovery of post-operative patients who cannot start land based exercises or for patients who are overweight or arthritic and cannot tolerate land exercise.
- Viscosity: this provides an excellent source of resistance to build strength with decreased joint stress that cannot be experienced on land.
- Hydrostatic pressure: decreases swelling and improves joint position awareness which is important for patients who have experienced joint sprains or other soft tissue or arthritic disorders.
SR utilizes specially designed and super-clean pools for our Aquatic Therapy patients. Typical benefits include:
- Increased strength and balance
- Enhanced endurance and aerobic conditioning
- Improved range of motion and coordination
- Decreased pain and fatigue
- Reduced swelling
At SR, a licensed physical therapist with specialized training in aquatic therapy and rehabilitation is authorized to perform the treatment.
